KC Conception to visit Cebu on Valentine's Day

-By Glaiza Jarloc (SunStar)

KAPAMILYA star KC Concepcion will celebrate Valentine's Day with the Cebuanos.

The television host will fly to Cebu on the 14th for the Visayas leg of the upcoming reality-singing competition "The X Factor Philippines."

"I'm looking forward to Valentine's Day. I'll be with the @TheXFactorPhils team and Cebuanos too!!!" the mega daughter tweeted.

KC and "The X Factor" team will be in Cebu Institute of Technology to witness hopefuls from the Queen City of the South to be the country's next singing idol.

Before that, she will also visit Bacolod City on February 11 at the Colegio San Agustin.

"The X Factor Philippines” is open to all Filipinos, aged 16 and above, who can sing and who thinks he or she has the 'x factor' to be the next big star.

Solo, duo, trio or group acts can audition and should bring minus one CD of their audition piece.

"The X Factor" was franchised and has its local versions in Australia, Belgium, Argentina, Spain, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Russia, Indonesia, Ukraine, Slovenia and more.

First introduced in the United Kingdom, "The X Factor" has conquered more than 30 countries as of last year and produced more than 50 winners around the world, including Melanie Amaro, who became the first season winner of "The X Factor USA" last month.

LJ Reyes on her upcoming sexy cover pictorial

Naging epektibo rin kasi siyang kontrabida sa huling primetime series niyang Time of My Life na pinagbidahan ni Kris Bernal.

"Ganoon silang mag-comment."

Gaano siya kasama ngayon sa The Good Daughter kumpara sa karakter niya sa Time of My Life?

"Alam n'yo rito, kasi tinatanong ko na nga si Direk, 'Hanggang saan ba? Hanggang saan ba ang sama ng ugali ko?'

"Niloloko ko siya. Pero sabi niya, sasama raw talaga ko.

"First two weeks kasi ipapakita nila na very loving ako sa family ko, pero protective ako sa kanila.

"Parang lagi akong on the defense na bawal n'yong galawin ang pamilya ko.

"Parang palagi akong nagtatanggol. Kasi ang mommy ko [Alicia Mayer], iba ang goal, e.

"So, since ako ang ate, kapag ang mommy mo palaging maraming iniisip, ikaw ang mag-i-stand in sa mga responsibilities na medyo nagkukulang siya.

"Kaya ganoon ang role ko, ateng-ate talaga. Hindi kagaya sa Time of My Life, immature."

Multi-tasking lahat 'to!

"At saka sa akin naman po, hindi ko naman po ito ginagawa para sa sarili ko kung hindi para na rin po kay Aki.

"At saka, sabi ko nga po sa interview, nag-aaral ako at nagwo-work ako as investment.

"Not only for myself but also for Aki... for his future."

STILL WITH PAULO?

Nagbi-breastfeed, nagwo-work, may school.

"Kaya ang peg ko ngayon, super woman nga po. Yung puwede ako dito habang nasa kabilang lugar ako."

May panahon pa ba siya para sa kanyang sarili?

"Alam n'yo, naiisip ko talaga, gusto kong mag-out of the country or mag-isa.

"Pero ang me time ko as of now ha, yung me time ko... yung mag-spend pa rin ako ng time kay Aki.

"Siguro medyo rewarding na lang din talaga for me is yung mga pampering for myself. Massage.

"Pero yung me time pa rin na alone time, I prefer pa rin na makasama si Aki."

STILL SEXY!

"Kapag may character, e, nag-e-effort talaga kami kapag binigyan kami ng show.

"Siguro yun din yun kaya hindi nila kami pinapabayaan. Kasi alam nilang nagtatrabaho kami nang mabuti," saad ni LJ. - Rose Garcia, PEP

Carla Abellana also joining Kapamilya network?

-By ABS-CBNnews.com

MANILA, Philippines – Will actress Carla Abellana jump ship and join the Kapamilya network?

According to a report by the Manila Bulletin, Abellana will leave her home network GMA 7 to transfer to the ABS-CBN after her contract expires this month.

The source of the Manila Bulletin said the actress had to consider a lot of factors before she was able to come up with a decision to leave her home network.

Prior to Abellana, former GMA 7 talents Iza Calzado, Paulo Avelino and Patrick Garcia have already joined ABS-CBN.

While Garcia is a returning Kapamilya, both Calzado and Avelino have said they wanted to explore more opportunities for them.

Matsunaga denies break-up with Heart

-By ABS-CBNnews.com

MANILA, Philippines - Brazilian-Japanese model-actor Daniel Matsunaga denied that he and girlfriend Heart Evangelista have broken up.

“No, hindi totoo ‘yon... We’re together,” he told ABS-CBN News during a fashion event on Wednesday.

Contrary to reports, Matsunaga said his relationship with Evangelista is actually doing well.

“Our relationship is going really well, thank God,” he stressed.

Matsunaga said he and Evangelista recently visited his hometown in Brazil.

“We went to Brazil also. We had a lot of [fun]. It was just for three weeks, just for her to know my family more.

And yeah, she got to know Brazil also (which is) part of my culture,” he said.

With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, Matsunaga said he is brewing something special for Evangelista.
“I want to make it very special like last year,” he said.

However, he refused to provide details.

Beauty Queen Danielle Castaño and former Starstruck Avenger Jade Lopez on FHM cover

Ex-Miss World contestant poses for FHM
-By ABS-CBNnews.com
MANILA, Philippines – Danielle Castano, the country’s representative to the 2008 Miss World beauty pageant, has joined the Viva Hot Babes roster, along with Jade Lopez, a former contestant at a TV talent search show.

The two women are also on the cover of the February issue of men’s magazine FHM wearing metal-spiked bikinis.

Castano was born in Los Angeles, California and returned to the Philippines in 2007 before joining the Binibining Pilipinas pageant the following year.

“[It] was my first pageant. I didn’t really plan on joining. When I came home in 2007, I was supposed to just visit my mom and my family,” she told the magazine, adding that her plans changed when she met Jonas Gaffud of the modelling agency Mercator. “They trained me for it [and] I learned a lot of things from them... And then, yeah…I won, ha ha!”

Although she didn’t talk about her projects with Viva, Castano said she feels that success will come her way this year.

“My New Year’s resolution is to keep on working for a better future. I want to be able to support my future kids and husband. Ayokong maging asawa lang na binibigyan ng pera,” she said.

Lopez, meanwhile, is trying to make a comeback after dropping out from showbiz to finish college.

“I’m a completely different person when I’m in front of the camera. I feel sexy and hot, which I really don’t feel when I’m not in front of the lens,” she told the magazine.

She also said actress Cristine Reyes gave her advice about posing for FHM.

“She advised me to stay away from salty foods and chocolates. So kumain na lang muna ako ng apples,” she said.

Lopez and Castano will have an autograph signing session on February 11 at the Robinsons Galleria.

Lady Gaga world tour to kick off in Seoul

-By Agence France-Presse

WASHINGTON—American pop diva Lady Gaga Wednesday unveiled the first dates for her upcoming world tour which she has dubbed the “Born This Way Ball” and will kick off in Seoul.

She is expected to do 110 shows this year following on the success of her smash hit “Born This Way,” and revealed the dates and locations of an initial 11 concerts.

The eccentric star tweeted the first dates to her massive fanbase on Twitter — just under 19 million followers — saying the shows will kick off in Seoul on April 27.

From there Lady Gaga will take her pop hits and extravagant costumes to Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, New Zealand and then perform six shows around Australia including Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
“The Born This Way Ball will perform 110 shows around the world. The opening dates are out today, with more announcements to ensue,” Gaga announced.

Gaga, known for sporting the pop industry’s most lavish and often most impractical outfits, is expected to produce a show-stopping series of concerts.

“Just saw first photos of the stage being built. Just peed all the way down to my Chanel shoes!!” Lady Gaga wrote on Twitter last month as preparations were ramping up for the tour.

The singer, real name Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta from New York, is famous for the hit songs “Bad Romance” and “Poker Face,” and has become a strident voice for gay rights and anti-bullying campaigns.

Lea Salonga addresses Valentine concert season issue from a broad perspective

Lea Salonga blasted suggestion that she’s hard to ‘deal’ with
-By Jojo P. Panaligan (Manila Bulletin)

MANILA, Philippines – Even before people could criticize her for seemingly “siding” with a foreign artist by appearing as special guest at the James Ingram concerts next week that directly compete with those mounted by local artists, accomplished singer-actress Lea Salonga shared her thoughts on why it shouldn’t be an issue at all.

“I’d like to think of it this way: I am good enough to compete with anyone in the world. You pit me against someone like him [James] – put me in a show with him – and I won’t be a shrinking violet. I won’t hesitate to step up because here is someone who has sold millions of records and won Grammys. I mean, this guy is amazing so I want to perform with him,” she told Bulletin Entertainment and other members of media in an interview last Feb. 8.

While she understands that those who raise the issue about foreign “invasion” just want to protect the local industry, she believes they should trust the market and strive to be competitive.

“Come up with a product that can exceed the quality of shows that are coming in [from abroad]. The concert going public knows well enough what they want, what they like, and where they wanna go.”

According to a reliable source, ticket sales to the James Ingram concert started moving faster as soon as people found out about Lea’s participation. This is the reason Lea feels that in this case, it’s not James Ingram competing with local artists, but she in healthy contest with her peers.

“Let the games begin!” she quipped good-naturedly.

Lea put herself in the public’s shoes to further drive her point home.

“Alam ko kung sino ang magaling at hindi magaling, whether foreign or local [artist].  I know when I can be guaranteed a good time so I will choose [a show by] an artist kung saan ako magiging masaya. It’s my hard-earned peso, after all, so I wanna spend it where I’m gonna get more bang,” she said.

The singer-actress revealed that the James Ingram concert was the only offer she got for this season. She, however, blasted talk that this may have been so perhaps because she’s hard to “deal” with.

“Hindi ako mahirap kausapin. You just have to speak to me like a professional. Don’t talk to me in a way that would make me go, ‘Why am I talking to you?’

“I’ve been in the business for something 30 years…and I’m turning 41 in a couple of weeks. I’d appreciate it if my mom and I are spoken to professionally, with everything cut and dried.”

She pointed out that singing and performing is her livelihood and that “I know my worth.”

“And if you know my worth, it’s very easy. Hindi ako mahirap kausapin kung professional mo akong kakausapin,” she said. “I have the highest respect for that kind of usapan, yung professional.”

The James Ingram concerts will be held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Feb. 17, and at the Waterfront Hotel Cebu on Feb. 18. Aside from solo songs, James and Lea will perform the duets “Somewhere Out There” and “How Do You Keep the Music Playing?”

This Valentine event is presented by That’s Ntertainment Productions and Cora Rodrigo with special participation of eRAse, The Edsa Shangri-La Hotel, The Black Fleet Limousine Bus, Glutathione, eRAse Placenta, Cyma Taverna, Cedrix, Fox Int’l Channels, ABS-CBN, Myx, ASAP 2012, Radio High 105.9 FM, Mellow 94.7, Monster Radio RX 93.1, Crossover 105.1, Love Radio 90.7, Yes FM 101.1, Easy Rock 96.3, Tambayan 101.9, Barangay LS 97.1, The Manila Bulletin, URLED Enterprise, StopOvers, Astro Plus, Ivory Music and Video, Sony Music, and Airtime Marketing Phils. Kim Chiu not yet ready to date Xian Lim?

Kim Chiu & Xian Lim - Feb 2012 issue of StarStudio Mag.
-By ABS-CBNnews.com

MANILA, Philippines -- Actress Kim Chiu is not yet ready to go out on a solo date with actor Xian Lim.

Speaking to StarStudio magazine, Chiu said there were times when Lim would ask her out but she made it clear that they should be with a group of friends.

"Minsan sasabihin niya 'Dinner naman tayo.' Ayaw ko ng kaming dalawa lang. Ano, date? Hello," she said, while bursting into laughter.

While they enjoy a widely accepted team-up, Chiu said she is still not thinking of taking their friendship to the next level.

"Hindi ko naman iniisip... Kung ano ang nandiyan, nandiyan. Kung ano ang meron kami, 'yun 'yung meron kami. hindi ako 'yung 'Ay, ay, ayan na. Magkaibigan naman kami ni Xian. Mas lumalalilm na nga lang ngayon," she said.

Chiu said she is just happy that she and Lim are enjoying each other's company.

"Masaya naman kami and habang tumatagal, mas nakikilala namin ang isa't isa," she said.

Chiu and Lim were first paired in the Sunday show "Your Song." Their tandem, however, bloomed when they did the television series "My Binondo Girl."

Good chemistry

Chiu believes that her friendship with Lim helped create their good onscreen chemistry.

Still Chiu admitted she did not expect many fans to support her team-up with Lim.

"It was very unexpected... Hindi ko nga alam kung bakit eh. Siguro kasi friends na talaga kami dati pa. Hindi na kami nahirapan makitungo sa isa't isa," she said.

Chiu said she is just grateful that their onscreen tandem earned a huge following.

"Nagpupunta pa nga sila sa taping. Nakakatuwa," she said.

Before she was paired with Lim, Chiu had to emerge from the shadow of her five-year partnership with actor Gerald Anderson.

Chiu was paired with several leading men before her team-up with Lim clicked in "My Binondo Girl."

And now that their television series is over, both are vocal in saying they are looking forward to working with each other again.

In a previous interview, Lim announced that he and Chiu are slated to do a movie under Star Cinema. Lim, however, said he is not sure if it will happen this year.

Clark Airport seeks Palace opinion on $144-M proposal of Fil-Korean group for DMIA Terminal 2

-By By Mary Ann Ll. Reyes (The Philippine Star)
MANILA, Philippines - Clark International Airport Corp. (CIAC) is seeking clear directions from Malacañang on the unsolicited proposal submitted by a Filipino-Korean consortium to undertake for $144 million the development and operation of a second terminal at the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA).

CIAC president and CEO Victor Jose Luciano told The STAR that he sought Malacañang’s opinion on whether it wants CIAC to go on an unsolicited or solicited route in finding a private sector partner for DMIA Terminal II.

Diversifying conglomerate San Miguel Corp. (SMC) earlier acquired a 70 percent stake in Philco Aero, the Filipino partner in the Filipino-Korean consortium that submitted an unsolicited proposal to undertake the DMIA Terminal II project.

Philco Aero president Ricardo Penson told The STAR that SMC has placed its investment in the former in escrow and will be released as soon as they officially bag the project.

The STAR earlier reported that the Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA) has given subsidiary CIAC, particularly the latter’s joint venture selection committee, the go-signal to prepare the terms of reference to subject the Philco Aero proposal to a Swiss challenge as required by government rules for unsolicited proposals to undertake joint venture projects with the government.

Penson also said in an interview that SMC has reimbursed the cost shelled out by Philco Aero for the development of the unsolicited proposal submitted to CIAC.

DMIA, which is 85 kilometers away from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, is the main airport serving the immediate vicinity of the Clark Special Economic Zone.

DMIA’s international passenger traffic reached 607,704 in 2010 while domestic passenger volume hit 46,525.

Luciano revealed that Philco Aero proposed the construction of a new passenger terminal with commercial facilities. “If you look at Heathrow, Changi and even Hong Kong, 60 percent of the revenues come from land use or non-aeronautical fees such as lease rentals and commercial spaces and the rest from landing, take-off and parking fees (aeronautical fees),” he said.

Once the new terminal is operational, he revealed that plans are to convert the old terminal into a domestic terminal or even a budget terminal.

Luciano added that plans for a third terminal will only come in once DMIA has been designated as an international gateway.

Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC) has likewise expressed interest in developing not only DMIA Terminal II, but also linking the Clark airport to Metro Manila via a high-speed rail system.

But Penson said their group has a cheaper approach to connecting Clark to Manila, and that is by way of articulated transport buses.

He said that each RTB will cost around 15,000 euros per bus with each bus able to accommodate 200 passengers. “We would probably need 10 buses,” he said. This would mean the cost of the 10 buses would be around P9 million.

Aside from the buses, Penson said they can construct a one-lane culvert dedicated for the buses.

He pointed out that unless DMIA is designated as a gateway, it would not make financial sense to spend so much for a transport system connecting Clark to Metro Manila, especially since a big portion of DMIA’s passengers come from Central Luzon and not from Metro Manila.

Penson revealed that since the mass transit system was not part of their unsolicited proposal to CIAC, their consortium can either amend their original proposal or submit the bus system project as a separate proposal.

He said that he had discussed the matter of the buses with SMC president Ramon Ang.

It is not yet clear how MPIC intends to enter the picture, although observers say the company can submit a better offer during the Swiss challenge phase. Under a Swiss challenge, any qualified group can submit a better proposal which the proponent of the unsolicited proposal has the right to match.

But if government decides to go through the solicited route approach, then MPIC can submit a bid. The SMC-led group will also have to post a bid.

MPIC chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan earlier said they are in talks with possible foreign partners involved in the aviation business for a comprehensive multi-billion airport project in Clark that will involve building and operating not only a second terminal at the DMIA but also a modern railway system connecting the airport to Manila.

“We need foreign partners for this project. Because basically, there is no one in this country who has built or made or run a big airport as big as this. We have to import expertise initially. We are talking to several groups involved in the airport business within the region,” Pangilinan said.

He also revealed that he is still open to a possible partnership with the SMC Group for the development of the Clark airport.

Sam Milby bumps into Brooklyn Decker

Brooklyn Decker is happy to meet Sam Milby

-By NR Ramos (Manila Bulletin)

MANILA, Philippines – Just a few days into his Hollywood jaunt, actor Sam Milby seems to already be going places based on the kind of people he meets there including bona fide Hollywood stars.

Milby himself tweeted about bumping into Brooklyn Decker, the hot model-cum-actress who last seen wearing a teeny-weeny bikini in the Adam Sandler comedy, "Just Go With It."

"Just met one of my biggest crushes. The gorgeous @brooklyndecker :)," Milby posted on his official Twitter account.
No, he did not just make it up. Decker herself confirmed the matter in her own Twitter account, even going on to note how nice it was to be introduced to the Fil-Am actor.

“I completely bombarded your meeting! Err, whoops! Nice meeting you!" she tweeted Milby.

Unfortunately for hopeful fans eager to infuse romantic allusion to the proceedings, Decker is already married, and supposedly happily so, to former tennis hotshot Andy Roddick (yes, Mandy Moore’s ex).

Decker first gained notice as one of the buxom babes featured in Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Issue. She went on to become a Victoria's Secret girl for the brand’s 2010 "Swim" collection.

Her first forays into acting constituted of several guest appearances on "Chuck," "Royal Pains" and "Ugly Betty." Decker is currently promoting her upcoming film "What To Expect When You're Expecting."

3 Finalist Castaways Admit Materialistic Side

Stef Prescot
Moviegoer
By Nestor Cuartero (mb.com.ph)

MANILA, Philippines — TOP 3 SURVIVORS: The Top 3 Survivors named in last Monday’s (Feb. 6) Tribal Council decision are not hiding their materialistic side after having endured 36 days of hard labor and deprivation from food and the good life on an island in Palawan.

While at some point in time, top 3 contenders Mara Yokohama, Stef Prescot, and Albert “Betong” Sumaya were at odds with each other during confinement, they agree that bringing home the P3-million cash pot offered by “Survivor Philippines” has been a driving force why they enlisted in the first place.

For Mara, 3 million pesos initially sounded like it was a lot of money.

“Come to think of it, it’s not enough to buy a high-end condo,” she said during a Feb. 6 interview.

Mara, however, isn’t hiding the fact that she’s as much drawn to the title, Ultimate Survivor, as much as she is with the prize. If she makes it as the Ultimate Survivor, she’d probably spend the money on travel. She also noted that the US edition of “Survivor” dangles a much more seducing cash prize of 1 million dollars!

• • •

PAY OFF DEBTS: For Betong, TV segment producer and occasional comedian, the 3-million-peso cash pot can go a long way in settling personal debts.

Stef Prescot said she’d be a hypocrite if she didn’t admit she wanted it all – title, cash prize, and the potential to expand her career. Stef believes winning the “Survivor” championship will draw attention to her career and can even land her choice roles in teleseryes.

Her greatest memory of island life was the night she was bitten by a snake, a Philippine cobra. Stef had to be airlifted to Makati Medical Center for two days of treatment.

Constant antagonist Mara, with whom Stef had a love-hate relationship on island, says it’s enough that she has experienced island life for over a month. Anything else that will come after that, such as better breaks in her acting career, will be a bonus, she added.

Mara left ABS-CBN’s Star Magic when she enlisted as one of the 20 castaways in “Survivor Philippines.” Her new manager is negotiating certain projects with GMA.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: During the “Survivor” interview held at the 17th floor Executive Lounge of GMA Network, talk shifted to first impressions.

Mara recalled she knew next to nothing of Stef Prescot, whom she mistook as a segment producer (SP) during the flight to Palawan.

Quick with her repartee, Stef, a Fil-Am mestiza, countered, “I thought Mara was one of the yaya’s.”

The self-proclaimed talk machinegun also said she also mistook Betong as a member of the staff, although not as a driver. But then, that is partly true.

Before he was tapped as a castaway, Betong and his partner, Maey Bautista, are members of the production personnel of GMA News and Public Affairs.

Following their stint on “Survivor,” the two production assistants have expressed interest in moving over to the entertainment side of things.

Betong says he wants to try playing sidekick roles in teleseryes or becoming a singer-comedian. At the recent Cebu leg of the “Survivor” promo tour in time for the Sinulog festival, we were floored by Betong’s performance. He could belt out a song and rock ‘n roll to boot.

All three finalist castaways look forward to being called champ and taker of the P3-million cash pot when “Survivor Philippines” names its ultimate winner on Friday, Feb. 10 over GMA-7.

Rico J.: 'ABS-CBN Should Have Only One Noontime Show'

Gossip Girl
By Giselle Sanchez (mb.com.ph)

MANILA, Philippines — Who says stars are the biggest sourgrapes? At least, not the ones I know.

Now that “It’s Showtime” has replaced “Happy Yipee Yehey” in the noontime slot of ABS-CBN, I asked one of “HYY” hosts Rico J. Puno for his two cents’ worth on the issue: “This is not the first time this has happened to me. It’s just like what happened to my program ‘Pilipinas Win na Win’ with Marco Sison and Rey Valera. So I just feel like I’m moving from one show to another. I’m just glad ABS-CBN management has made other plans for me. I have always told them that there should only be one variety noontime show in ABS-CBN. Since ‘It’s Showtime’ beat ‘Happy Yipee Yehey’ in the ratings game, then ‘It’s Showtime’ stays.”

I just don’t know if Rico went on with his plan of wearing a T-shirt that says “It’s Showtime” on the last day of “Happy Yipee Yehey.” That would have been funny. I guess Rico is the type of entertainer who is way too busy to think of the show he is losing compared to the many shows he is going to have like his big Valentine concert on Feb. 14 at the Newport Theater of Resorts World with a 20-piece orchestra. In the show with him are vamp Vernie Varga, Jennylyn Mercado and Katya Santos. “The latter will bare more of the physical than the voice,” kidded Rico J.

No Rivalry Between John, JM

Governor Imee Marcos’ movie “Pinta*kasi,” which stars both John Wayne Sace and JM de Guzman, bagged best picture and best actor awards (for JM de Guzman) in the recent MMFF New Wave Division awards night. Because of this success, Governor Imee decided to blow up the digital indie film to 35 mm to make it accessible for commercial viewing. It is now showing in all SM cinemas (Megamall, MOA, Marikina, Edsa, Cebu and Iloilo) and will be shown on Feb. 29 at SM Baguio, SM Batangas and SM Davao.

John plays protagonist while JM depicts resident baddie. Since JM bagged the award, the press asked John how he felt about the antagonist winning the award when he was the one playing “modern day Rizal.” John was quick to answer, “Ang tagumpay ng isa ay tagumpay ng lahat.” Lovely.

Working with John in the film, I believed in his answer because I know JM and John became best friends in the film. They opted to stay in Governor Imee’s house for two months instead of going home when the film was being shot. It was also in this film when John started cleaning up his act because he was going to be become a father of a baby boy. No more vices and he was always on time during shooting. Good for you, John!

73-member mercy mission off to Negros Oriental

Earthquake site in Negros Oriental - AFP

-By Philippine Daily Inquirer

A multiagency mercy mission is expected to arrive Thursday in Guihulngan and Dumaguete cities in Negros Oriental to extend medical and psychosocial assistance, and to provide clean water to survivors of a killer-earthquake that struck the Visayas on Monday.
Firefighting personnel and resources in the region have also been mobilized to deliver truckloads of potable water and assist rescue and relief efforts in the devastated areas.
The 73-member mercy mission is a joint undertaking of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), Department of Health (DOH), Armed Forces of the Philippines, and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in Albay province, said Raffy Alejandro, OCD director for Bicol. It will render service for 10 days.
Alejandro said medical, sanitary and security personnel led by William Sabater of the DOH would bring along a water purifying machine during their trip on board the Navy boat BRP General Luna from Bulan, Sorsogon, to Guihulngan. The machine can produce 33,000 liters of potable water per hour.
A team of two doctors and nurses led by Dr. Rose Rempillo of the DOH will fly to Dumaguete to help give postdisaster health intervention and psychosocial services.
Bureau of Fire Protection
In a directive, Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo ordered the chief of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to bring at least 10 fire trucks with potable water to Guihulngan and ordered the bureau’s heads in the cities of Escalante, Cadiz and Bacolod, which have two fire trucks each, to join in the effort.
“Guihulngan is currently in a very sad state. All water systems and electricity are down. The residents badly need potable water and we are doing all we can to deliver it to them as soon as possible,” Samuel Perez, BFP chief, said in a statement.
“This situation is also similar in Bacolod City where the local disaster risk reduction and management councils reported that all water coming from their natural water springs are polluted with mud,” Perez added.
He said he ordered his men in Central and Western Visayas to coordinate with local fire volunteers in Negros Oriental to help local government units in addressing quake-related problems.
UN assistance
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) said it was ready to assist earthquake victims in the Visayas while continuing relief efforts for those affected by Tropical Storm “Sendong” in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan.
“We will deploy additional personnel to the new disaster areas, if needed, to help in the rapid assessment to identify the most vulnerable populations in evacuation centers so we can deliver a more targeted response,” Arlene Calaguian, media and communications officer of UNFPA, said. Fil-foreigners join Azkals Middle East camp

Azkals -Pilipinas Futbol

-By By Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star)

MANILA, Philippines - Europe-based players Jason de Jong, Ray Jonsson, Roland Muller and Neil Etheridge will link up with their local-based Azkals teammates in their training camp in the Middle East, suiting up for at least one of their three scheduled friendlies.

Fil-Dutch midfielder De Jong of Dordrecht was due to join the Azkals in Dubai from The Netherlands yesterday, while Fil-German goalkeeper Muller of Bundesliga 2 club MSV Duisburg, will be in the UAE today.

The duo will arrive in time for Phl’s match against Uzbekistan on Saturday night (midnight Sunday in Manila) at the Al Maktoum Stadium at Al Nasr Sports Club. They are expected to see action in the Azkals’ second assignment as well, against Qatar Star League First Division side Al Ahli Sports Club on Feb. 13 in Doha, Qatar.

Fil-British custodian Etheridge of Fulham, for his part, is expected by Feb. 14, two days before the Azkals tangle with Qantas Australia U-23, also in Dubai.

The core of the team landed in Dubai from Manila yesterday to start their 10-day camp preparatory to the AFC Challenge Cup next month in Nepal.

In the lineup are veterans Phil and James Younghusband, Rob Gier, Ian Araneta, Chieffy Caligdong, Angel Guirado, Roel Gener, and Misagh Bahadoran, Jason Sabio, and Lexton Moy; U-23 mainstays Joshua Beloya, Carli de Murga, Paolo Pascual, and Marwin Angeles; and new recruits, Ruben Doctora of Stallions FC, Fil-Spanish Luis Guirado, and Fil-German striker Denis Wolf.

“We have one month before the Challenge Cup and we need to use the time wisely,” coach Michael Weiss said as reported on theazkalsfootballteam.com website.

“The UAE is producing some very attractive football and it’s fast becoming attractive to the Europeans. That is why we have chosen Dubai. It’s important for a developing country like ours to get the experience of playing high quality opposition,” he added.

Manny expects Bradley to run

World’s No. 1 pound-for-pound Manny Pacquiao trades his boxing gloves for golf clubs to play in yesterday’s pro-am tournament of the ICTSI Philippine Open. -Jun Mendoza

-By Abac Cordero (The Philippine Star)

MANILA, Philippines - Manny Pacquiao doesn’t expect Timothy Bradley to engage and go toe-to-toe when they meet on June 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Truth is Pacquiao thinks Bradley will use the size of the ring to the hilt.

“Tatakbo ‘yan (He will run),” said Pacquiao yesterday at the Wack Wack Golf and Country Club where he played a round with Filipino golf star Frankie Miñoza.

Pacquiao has agreed to the terms of the fight and even though no contract has been signed it’s green and go for his return to the ring four months from now.

Pacquiao’s adviser, Mike Koncz, is expected to arrive from the US this week, bringing with him the details of the fight, and all the papers for Pacquiao to sign.

Bradley won the Pacquiao lottery after negotiations with Floyd Mayweather Jr. bogged down for the third time in more than two years.

Pacquiao also sought a rematch with Miguel Cotto but the Puerto Rican whom the Filipino knocked out in 2009 chose to fight the undefeated Mayweather.

Bradley was labeled by Pacquiao’s chief trainer, Freddie Roach, as a dirty fighter who uses his head and elbows aside from his hands.

Pacquiao thinks so, too.

“Madumi nga (Yes, he’s dirty),” said the reigning WBO welterweight champion.

“Napapansin ko nga. Gumagamit ng ulo (I’ve noticed it. He uses his head),” added Pacquiao of the WBO junior-lightweight champion from Cathedral City.

Pacquiao is 54-3-2 with 38 knockouts while Bradley is 28-0 with only 12 knockouts under his name. But Pacquiao hasn’t knocked out anybody since Cotto.

Pacquiao had gone the distance, some real tough rounds, against Joshua Clottey, Antonio Margarito, Shane Mosley and Juan Manuel Marquez in his last four fights.

Now people are expecting him to go for the kill against Bradley, considering that he’s coming off a not-so-impressive win against Marquez last November.

“Mahirap magsabi kasi depende yan sa kalaban (It’s tough to say because it depends on the opponent),” said Pacquiao.

“Try natin (Let’s try),” he added.

PHILSTAR: Tears of Joy

SPORTING CHANCE
By Joaquin Henson (The Philippine Star)

If you ask Don Allado is he’s a Mama’s boy, he probably won’t hesitate to say yes and he’ll say it proudly. That’s because his mother Joy Crisostomo Allado, a former Maryknoll (now Miriam College) varsity basketball player, is his biggest fan. From when he was a little kid, Joy and husband Caloy (another former varsity cager with UP) doted on Don. Now that Don has a life of his own with wife Maricar de Mesa, his parents continue to shower him with love and affection. Not that Caloy and Joy play favorites with their children who happen to be three boys. They’re just as caring with Brian, 35, and Drew, 23. It’s just that Don is in the public spotlight as a two-time UAAP MVP and a PBA veteran. Brian, by the way, is a biology major and works in Los Angeles with a company that specializes in customizing wheelchairs. Drew is enrolling in law school, also in Los Angeles, this schoolyear.

Last Sunday, Don stood head and shoulders above everyone in leading La Salle to a 117-104 victory over Ateneo in a charity game at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. At 34, he was the most senior player on the court but didn’t show his age in compiling 23 points and seven rebounds. Coincidentally, his PBA career single-game high is 23 points which he scored with Alaska in 2003. Don was almost unstoppable and once, after hitting a basket, did a Tim Tebow impersonation by genuflecting on his right knee with his left hand on his forehead like The Thinker.

The game featured PBA players from both schools so the lineups were star-studded. The Archers, coached by Franz Pumaren, listed Allado, Mac-Mac Cardona, Jvee Casio, Joseph Yeo, Ryan Arana, Rico Maierhofer, Ren-Ren Ritualo, Mike Cortez, J. R. Aquino, Carlo Sharma and Jerwin Gaco. T. Y. Tang and Willy Wilson were suited up but didn’t play because of injuries. Coach Norman Black’s Eagles were L. A. Tenorio, Rico Villanueva, Japeth Aguilar, Larry Fonacier, J. C. Intal, Doug Kramer, Eric Salamat, Noy Baclao, Magnum Membrere, Rich Alvarez and Paolo Bugia.

Since entering the PBA with Alaska in 1999, Don has moved to Talk ‘N’ Text, Purefoods, Air 21, back to Talk ‘N’ Text, back to Purefoods/B-Meg and finally, to Barako Bull. Last season, he averaged 4.9 points, 4.4 rebounds and 16.8 minutes in 37 games, with eight starts, for the Llamadoes. This past conference in his 13th season, Don hit at a 6.6 clip for the Bulls, scoring at least nine points in eight of his 15 outings.

“Don dominated,” said his father Caloy, referring to La Salle’s victory. “It was a redeeming factor for him. He showed that at his age, he can still get the job done. There’s no doubt in my mind that he can play in the PBA for three or four more years. He’s disciplined, he’s a hard worker and he’s a warrior.”

Caloy said Don’s contract with Barako expires in August. “He’s happy where he is,” said Caloy. “He’d like to continue playing for Barako. But of course, he’s open to other options that will benefit his future and career.”

Caloy and Joy were in the stands cheering for their son last Sunday. “I was just thrilled beyond words,” said Joy. “It took me down memory lane again to watch my son play for his school. He was the oldest of all the players but my son prevailed over the other younger guys. Truly, they called him the King Archer of La Salle. Alam mo naman ako, mababaw lang ang luha ko and when the La Salle crowd called him King Archer, tulo talaga ang luha ko. Tears of Joy, literally and figuratively.”

Joy jokingly said as Don’s mother, she’s entitled to bragging rights. “You could just hear me cheering ‘That’s my boy,’” she said. And as she cheered her lungs out, Don must have looked her way as if to say, “That’s my Mom.”

Smart Gilas assistant coach Jude Roque was a co-emcee with Calvin Millado and Alex Gonzaga in the rousing program that highlighted the San Beda College homecoming last Feb. 4, the school’s “red-letter” day, at the Mendiola campus. Could it be the start of a second career for Jude?

The homecoming hosts were the silver jubilarian high school class of ’87 with Jude as member and the golden jubilarian high school class of ’62 with no less than PLDT chairman Manny V. Pangilinan as batch member.

According to Jude, the program started with an opening number by Rico Blanco and his band followed by the introduction of the silver and golden jubilarians then came performers Elmo and Arkin Magalona (sons of late Bedan Francis M) with the Manueovers, Tuesday Vargas, Rachelle Ann Go, Meg Imperial, Lovi Poe, K Brosas, Wendy Valdez and Iwa Moto. The climax featured Jet Pangan and the Dawn belting out the theme song “Pagbabalik (Sa San Beda).” Rowell Santiago directed the show with DJ Boyet Almazan.

Among those who attended the homecoming were MVP, Jude’s batchmate Palawan Gov. Baham Mitra, Sports Hall of Famer and Olympic basketball player Tony Genato, Batangas Rep. Tom Apacible, former Bulacan Rep. Boji Cabochan, former President Estrada’s oldest son Jojo Ejercito, former Department of Health Secretary Jimmy Galvez-Tan, former NSO Administrator Tomas Africa, Red Lion legend Dave Brodett, former SGV head Manny Reyes and City of Manila Administrator Jay Marzan.

No Grace Lee, no date for birthday boy President

-By Bayani San Diego Jr. (Philippine Daily Inquirer)

Radio and television personality Grace Lee did not get to hang out with her rumored suitor on his 52nd birthday Wednesday.
“I greeted him, but as we all know, he had to fly to the Visayas to visit the victims of the earthquake,” she said.
“I understand. He belongs to the people first,” Lee said.
President Benigno Aquino III spent his birthday Wednesday visiting victims of the deadly quake that rocked Negros and Cebu on Monday and inspecting damaged areas.
Asked what she gave Mr. Aquino for a birthday present, she giggled and demurred: “I don’t know yet.”
In spite of the undue media interest, Lee insisted that dating Mr. Aquino has not really turned her world topsy-turvy.
“My life hasn’t changed much,” she said in an interview Wednesday.
“Aside from all the attention, I still have a normal life. I still have the same job. I still have the same set of friends,” she said.
The only difference is that the Korea-born Lee is dating a head of state and, with it, comes certain realities, she said.
She also declined to divulge whether they would have time for a date after his Visayan trip. She explained that she couldn’t go into details because dating the President comes with various limitations.
Lee said she was busy with work Wednesday, which marked her official launch as endorser of a local beauty product, Ever Bilena.
If not on Mr. Aquino’s birthday, would they be able to go on a romantic date on Valentine’s Day next week?
She wasn’t too forthcoming either and stressed that everything is still up in the air.
Dating a President
She has come to accept that you cannot “plan too far ahead” if you’re dating the President.
“I cannot make plans because the President’s schedule is unpredictable. We don’t know what will happen tomorrow,” she said.
Since she’s also from media (as news presenter on GMA News TV’s “Balitanghali” and “24 Oras Weekend”), she said that she understands and respects her colleagues’ job and need to report and “satisfy the public’s curiosity.”
“I’m learning a lot, too. I’m seeing a new side to this industry,” she said.
As a result, she tries to be more careful now, especially since she’s been criticized for being too “open” and chatty—not just by the press but purportedly even by people close to the President, according to one source.
“I know that criticisms are inevitable. I’d like to appeal to viewers to be more discerning and sensitive. Unless they see me saying it on TV, they shouldn’t accept anything they hear or read at face value,” Lee said.
She took pains to explain that she “didn’t grant interviews left and right.”
“I only gave four interviews and these were cut, spliced and aired on different shows on all three networks, giving the impression that I’ve been all over town,” she said.
Misquoted
Being misquoted is an inevitability, too.
Case in point: She asserted that Malcañang never offered to provide her with personal security.
“I was just asked by a reporter if I was scared (about possible security risks)… and I answered that if he felt I needed a bodyguard and then he would ask me about it,” she recounted.
“Just to clarify, the President never offered me any type of security,” she said.
Her family has also learned to cope with the scrutiny. “Once, a reporter suddenly showed up at my mom’s grocery store. So she pretended to be a customer and escaped through the backdoor.”
Generally, her family has been shielded from all the fuss and frenzy so far. “I’m not too worried about them because they have their own world in the Korean community. I know my mom would be able to handle it well.”
Now that she is in the middle of this media circus, she has grown a tad wiser, she remarked.
“I thought I knew what I was getting into, but then I wasn’t fully aware. I didn’t expect the magnitude (of the media attention). So we just take it one step at a time,” she said.
She recalled that GMA 7 anchor Pia Arcanghel, who works with Lee on “Balitanghali,” had given her a DVD of “The American President,” a 1995 Hollywood movie that starred Michael Douglas as a bachelor politician who fell for a lobbyist played by Annette Bening.
“I’m looking forward to watching it,” she said.
The House minority meanwhile asked Mr. Aquino to come out with more “meaningful comments” and not just flirt with  Lee.
“But I think the President is entitled to his private life and considering that he is a bachelor it is high time that he get married so at least we have a First Lady,” said House Minority Leader Danilo Suarez. With reports from Jocelyn R. Uy and Gil Cabacungan
