Shamcey gets advice from Kris

MANILA, Philippines - Miss Universe 2011 third runner-up Shamcey Supsup said Queen of All Media Kris Aquino has given her a friendly advice on the possibility of taking on a showbiz career.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Supsup said that Aquino has encouraged her to pursue television hosting, since the beauty queen was vocal about her interest in the said path.

“Siguro, I always said when it comes to expressing myself, my opinons, talking, I love talking. So ‘yon ‘yung magiging I think puwede kong pasukan [sa showbusiness],” she said.

“So ‘yon, sabi naman niya (Aquino), why not go into hosting daw,” she added.

With regards to a possible career in acting, Supsup said that Aquino has warned her that being an actress requires strong commitment.

Supsup shared, “Sabi nga sa akin, actually si Ms. Kris Aquino told me na you need to have passion when you’re an actress. And kung wala sa loob mo mahihirapan kasi you have to be dedicated to your craft.”

MANILA, Philippines - After admitting his admiration for Kathryn Bernardo, Daniel Padilla seems to be making a move to get closer to the young actress.

In an interview with "Kris TV" on Thursday, Padilla admitted that he has been visiting Bernardo in her house.

"Binibisita ko po siya sa bahay," said Padilla.

He added that he also brings her Bernardo's favorite food, cheesecake.

"Mayroon po akong dala, kung ano ang gusto niyang kainin (cheesecake)," he said.

Bernardo's mother, Min, for her part, gave Padilla a piece of advice. "Okay lang naman dumalaw, basta tao ba siyang papanhik, di ba? What I mean is magalang," she said.

Padilla and Bernardo first worked together in ABS-CBN teen series "Growing Up." They are gearing up for a new television show.

Bee Gees lead singer in 'spectacular' cancer recovery

LONDON - Bee Gees lead singer Robin Gibb said Friday he was making a "spectacular" recovery from colon cancer and felt better than ever.

"The prognosis is that it's almost gone and I feel fantastic and really from now on it's just what they could describe as a 'mopping-up' operation," the 62-year-old told BBC radio.

Robin's twin brother Maurice died in 2003 from complications resulting from a twisted intestine, and younger brother Andy died in 1988 following a battle against cocaine addiction.

Robin Gibb has had repeated health problems himself due to a twisted bowel but after several periods of ill health, he was also found to be suffering colon cancer.

"I was diagnosed with a growth in my colon. It was removed. And I've been treated for that by a brilliant doctor, and in their own words 'the results have been spectacular'," he said.

"I feel better than I did ten years ago. I'm active, my appetite's fantastic, the plumbing is all in perfect working order."

Gibb is soon to release a classical concept album about the sinking of the Titanic to mark the centenary of the disaster.

He is aiming to perform at the symphonic work's premiere in London on April 10.

"If I had a choice about how I'd like to feel for the rest of my life, this would be it," Gibb added.

"I don't know how I could feel any better."

British-born brothers the Bee Gees are one of the biggest-selling groups of all time.

They scaled the heights of the pop world in the 1970s with disco hits "Stayin' Alive" and "Night Fever", and have notched up more than 200 million record sales during a career spanning more than 50 years.

Tight Story Makes 'Pinta*kasi' A Good Watch

MANILA, philippines — The mixed media Pinoy film “Pinta*kasi” won the Best Full-Length Independent Film in last year’s MMFF. Thanks to a reconstructed story flow that practically saved it from becoming just another indie film with a weak plot loaded with weird scenes.

Last Tuesday, the film’s director Lee Meily pointed out to a pool of entertainment writers that after the then-unfinished project reached her, she and her group had to fix its story which they initially found indiscernible.

“The story back then was not flowing. Marami kaming tinapon nung pumasok kami to work on the project,” she said prior to a special screening of the film at Gateway Cinema 1 in Cubao.

Produced by Governor Imee Marcos, who many years ago bankrolled now-classics “Himala” and “Oro Plata Mata,” this movie that mixes live action and animation took three years to make. Meily went on board the second year. She admitted retaining some of the elements handed to her for cure in order to lessen the waste of money.

“We want to show here Filipino ingenuity in the field of mixed media,” Lee pointed out. “I believe if we’re to measure the craftsmanship of our animators, we’re about 80 to 85 percent in terms of global standards.”

“Pinta*kasi” tackles life at a community of informal settlers called Isla Pulo, which is based on a real-life site washed away by typhoon “Ondoy.” It stars John Wayne Sace, Erich Gonzales, and JM De Guzman who as villain Tikboy won Best Actor in the New Wave category of MMFF 2011.

The film showcases the struggle of a good-natured boy in adapting to the ways and means of poverty-stricken young, small-time thieves and other shattered characters.

Former matinee idol William Martinez plays a cop in a support role, along with Giselle Sanchez, who acts as his wife, and Boots-Anson Roa, cast as a sari-sari store owner with a dark secret.

How to make it appear chewable is arguably often the problem of directors disliking the mainstream approach of telling a story. Most of them deliver a simple idea in a rather complex, often dark treatment that confuse viewers instead of enlightening them. While the animation aspect of “Pinta*kasi” and its hip soundtrack assure audiences of its “indie feel,” its tight, believable story diverts attention to fanciful artistic twists. This quality should endear it more to mainstream audiences.

“Pinta*kasi,” a word play on cockfighting and painting (which is protagonist DJ’s creative passion and driving force), opens at selected SM Cinemas on February 8.

Scherzinger Vacates 'X-Factor' Seat; Paula Abdul Also Confirms Exit

MANILA, Philippines — Filipino-American Nicole Scherzinger will not be renewed in season two of the American “X-Factor,” AP reported Jan. 31.

The former Pussycat Dolls frontwoman is not the only person leaving the show, host Steve Jones and fellow judge Paula Abdul also announced that they will not return in the second season of the reality singing search.

“A Fox spokeswoman said Monday that the judge (Scherzinger) and host will not return for the show’s second season. No other details were provided,” said the report.

Jones released via Twitter a statement about his “X-Factor” exit. Without disclosing if it was his choice to leave the show or not, he posted that the development was “a shame” but remained thankful having hosted its first season last year because he had “a great time” with the gig.

Abdul confirmed to EW.com that she is ending her own “X-Factor” run. “Yes, it’s true; I won’t be returning to ‘The X-Factor’ next season. I’ve learned through my longevity in this industry that business decisions oftentimes override personal considerations. Simon [Cowell] and I, along with Fox and [producers] Fremantle, have been communicating about this for a while now, and I have absolute understanding of the situation.

“Simon is, and will remain a dear friend of mine and I’ve treasured my experience working this past season with my extended family at Fox and Fremantle. I want nothing more than for ‘The X-Factor’ to exceed ALL of their wildest dreams. This truly has been a blessing and I am most grateful.”

No friendships were damaged, however, as Cowell, who left “American Idol” to bring the British “X-Factor” to the US, said: “I want to say a massive thank you to Paula, Nicole and Steve for being part of ‘The X-Factor’ last year. We had a lot of fun making the show together and importantly, we found some real talent and stars. You do develop friendships with the people you work with and Paula, in particular, is a very close friend and I expect to be working with her on another project in the near future. I’m sure all three are going to have massive success in what they do next, but now is the time to thank them all for everything they did last year.”

The acerbic Brit failed to deliver the expected goods (read: viewership tally amounting to about 20 million) for “X-Factor” compared to his former show “American Idol.” Not that the singing search failed to amass the numbers. “X-Factor USA” posted solid numbers but not solid enough to beat time slot rivals “Modern Family” and “Criminal Minds.”

EW.com also printed this statement from Fox’s president of alternative Mike Darnell: “We love Paula. She is a remarkable talent and we appreciate all of her contributions. We’re lucky that she is a part of the Fox family, and we look forward to working with her again soon.”

Pacquiao-Bradley fight in the works

MANILA, Philippines - Bob Arum is expected to announce Manny Pacquiao vs Timothy Bradley in a couple of days, perhaps Tuesday right after the Super Bowl.

The Top Rank chief was scheduled to sit down with Bradley’s manager, Cameron Dunkin, and Pacquiao’s adviser, Mike Koncz, in San Antonio yesterday.

Pacquiao, who’s in the Philippines, is being briefed of the development, according to sports analyst Ronnie Nathanielsz who’s in San Antonio covering the Nonito Donaire fight.

“We will sit down and try to thresh everything out and then Manny will be contacted in the Philippines and hopefully we will be able to make an announcement on Tuesday,” Arum said.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. beat Pacquiao to the draw when he announced the other day, the day he was granted by the NSAC his license, his June 9 showdown with Miguel Cotto.

Pacquiao wanted Cotto as well. But problems with the weight stood in the way, and the Puerto Rican said he can’t drop down to 147 just to earn a rematch with Pacquiao.

So, Cotto went to Mayweather, who said he’d fight the reigning WBA light-middleweight champion at the limit of 154 lb, nothing more, nothing less.

It wasn’t a touch choice for Cotto, who will reportedly get 35 percent of the revenue, and possibly a total package of $30 million once everything comes in.

Arum said everybody has to move on after negotiations for Pacquiao vs Mayweather bogged down for the third time in as many years.

He said while Pacquiao and Mayweather are working on their respective fights, it’s still possible for the superfight to happen in November.

Arum is also putting up Juan Manuel Marquez vs Lamont Peterson in July, and whoever wins that fight may end up facing the winner between Pacquiao and Bradley later this year.

Mayweather offered Pacquiao $40 million with no share from the pay-per-view sales while Pacquiao offered Mayweather $50 million guaranteed, with the winner getting 55 percent of the revenues.

Nothing came out of both offers because Mayweather said he deserves more than what’s being offered to him, and called Pacquiao a “$10 million fighter” who should be happy with $40 million.

“It’s really bizarre, it’s really sad because it’s making a circus of boxing. It’s obvious to anybody who has looked at this – the fight isn’t happening because of Mayweather.

“For two years one thing was in stone – that was a 50-50 deal and now Mayweather has departed from it and that’s ridiculous. Hopefully when our fight is set in June, his fight is now set for May, we will sit down sensibly without a lot of pressure and plan a fight if both (Pacquiao and Mayweather) are successful for November, hopefully,” Arum added.

The problem here is if Mayweather beats Cotto, he becomes the new light-middleweight champion, and he might call on Pacquiao to fight him at 154 lb.

Pacquiao said he’d never fight any higher than 147. So, here’s just another reason why the superfight won’t happen – in November.

Hayden: I'm not after Vicki's money

MANILA, Philippines - Neither of them wears an engagement ring to, as the song puts it, show the world that they belong to each other. But Dr. Vicki Belo and her beloved Hayden Kho don’t have to show off since everybody knows anyway that, through thick and thin, come hell or high water, for better or for worse and you can quote all the clichés in the whole wide world…they stick to each other with the tenacity of glue.

Together for more than five years (not counting their six-month cooling off following Hayden’s indiscretion to the tune of Careless Whisper), the sweethearts got engaged middle of last year but up to now they haven’t set a date for their wedding (if it will ever happen).

“It’s funny,” said Hayden Thursday afternoon before the press launch of his eponymous scent. “In showbiz, people keep on talking when a couple is getting married, and once the couple is married people start speculating when the marriage will breakup.”

Vicki once told The STAR, jokingly it turned out, that she and Hayden would march down the aisle (where, she didn’t say) after their friends David Foster and his girlfriend Yolanda did on 11-11-11. And when they didn’t, Vicki moved the date to 12-12-12.

But why get married? Why, so to speak, rock the boat? They have survived tests and trials in their romance perhaps made stronger and not at all hampered by a 25-year age-gap, so why not just continue to enjoy their company?

If ever they would get married (although their friends doubt it), Hayden said that he would make sure that they signed a pre-nuptial agreement.

“I’ve said it before and I’m saying it again,” insisted Hayden at the risk of sounding like a broken record, “I’m not after Vick’s money. I love her for what she is and not for what she has.”

And to prove that he can stand on his own two feet, again contrary to what people think that he’s dependent on Vicki’s generosity, Hayden has decided to produce his own perfume that comes in 13 fragrances, for both men and women — Elegant, Romantic, High Fashion, Bold & Sexy, among them. It was announced at the presscon that Hayden will be distributed by the reputable Ever Bilena.

“I studied in Paris how to make perfume,” revealed Hayden who put up his own company Inovacao da Vida (Innovation of Life) in June 2010, and four months later launched his perfume. “Ever Bilena is a trusted company so I feel secure,” added Hayden, in the same breath clarifying that there’s no conflict with Vicki’s The Belo Medical Clinic because the clinic isn’t producing perfume…yet. “This way, I can show people that the business (Inovacao) is my own and not associated with Vicki’s,” although he’s open to Vicki’s advice. (Vicki was at the presscon to support Hayden in his venture with Ever Bilena.)

Looking fresh and self-assured, Hayden confessed that “I was once stupid” but said that he’s a changed man now. “I won’t ever be stupid again.”

Besides promoting his perfume, Hayden has ventured into charity work. A few weeks ago, he and Vicki’s daughter Cristalle Henares found themselves together in Cagayan de Oro to help the flood victims. If the perfume can help sanitize his image and make Hayden smell good, extending a helping hand to the needy can even do much more than that.

Asked if he’s wearing Hayden, he said, “I do, every day,” inviting you to smell him.

Will Hayden the scent hypnotize women into falling for Hayden the macho man?

Hayden smiled, “If it does, it’s not my fault na ha…”

By the way, does he still look at other women?

“Yes, I do,” Hayden admitted. “Pero hanggang look na lang.”
