Marestella Torres legit Olympic qualifier

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines Amateur Track and Field Association clarified Thursday that Southeast Asian Games long jump queen Marestella Torres is going to the London Olympics not as a token entry but as a legitimate qualifier.
Patafa president Go Teng Kok said the 30-year-old Torres surpassed the Olympic Games’ B-standard with her victory in the SEA Games last November.

“She qualified after the Indonesia SEA Games,” said Go. “That goes to show that she’s a real Olympic-caliber athlete.”
Torres’ 6.71-meter jump, a new SEA Games record, surpassed the 6.65m B-standard set for the London Games by the International Athletics Associations Federation. It was actually just 0.04m short of the A-standard of 6.75m.

That made her the second Filipino athlete to secure an Olympic slot after boxer Mark Anthony Barriga, who qualified in the lightflyweight division in last year’s world qualifying in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Under Olympic rules, a country is allowed to field two athletes each in track and field and swimming.
Torres, the 2009 Asian champion, will be making her third Olympic appearance, but this time based on her own merit.

Go said he had asked the IAAF if the Patafa could still send two more athletes.
The other athletics bet is five-time SEA Games 3,000m steeplechase champion Rene Herrera.
The 32-year-old Herrera has a personal best of 8:52.23 he established in the SEA Games in Palembang. But the time was way slower than the B-standard of 8:32.00. The IAAF A-standard is 8:23.10.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News on Wednesday, Geronimo said she hopes that they can arrange a possible project together.

“I look forward to hearing her sing again at performing with her, kapag bibigyan po ako ng pagkakataon na makasama po siya on one stage,” she said.

Early this year, Aunor left for Boston, Massachusetts to have her vocal chords treated.

Aunor lost her "golden voice" after an alleged botched cosmetic procedures in Japan in March 2010.

Frustrated cook

Geronimo also revealed that she is a frustrated cook and that she wants to pursue a culinary course.

“Yes opo, opo [gusto ko pong mag-cooking lessons] kung mabibigyan ako ng time,” she said.

“Gusto ko rin po career-in ang pagluluto,” she added.

According to Geronimo, for quite some time now, she has been thinking about going to a culinary school to learn a thing or two about cooking.

“Actually matagal na [ako nangangarap na matutong magluto], kaso medyo hindi ako pinapayagang magluto-luto sa kusina kasi may pagka-clumsy po ako,” she said.

“Pero ‘yon, gusto ko na [pag-aralan talaga] since tumatanda na rin po ako and ito nag-e-endorse ako ng mga pagkain, mga gamit sa pagkain pagluluto,” she added.

In the episode aired Friday night, Lim and Guidicelli told Big Brother how much they enjoyed the company of the housemates.

“Sa totoo lang Kuya parang nag-e-enjoy kami ngayon. Tapos, siguro kasi ‘yung nakita namin sa loob parang pamilya,” Lim said.

Big Brother offered Lim and Guidicelli a chance to extend their stay inside his house.

Although they wanted to take on the proposal, the two respectfully declined because they already had scheduled engagements the following day.

“Ako I’m willing to stay one day, two days, pero huwag namang 2 linggo. Huwag namang isang linggo,” Guidicelli said.

“Kung tatanungin mo ako ngayon, stay ako," Lim said. "Kaso paano ‘yon may schedule ako bukas?”

Aware of the 2 visitors’ predicament, Big Brother gladly let Lim and Guidicelli leave.

MANILA, Philippines -- The popular "Camp Rock" movies have already launched the careers of the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato.

Now another "Camp Rock" alum is hoping to hit the big time: Fil-American actor, singer and dancer Roshon Fegan.

Fegan, who played Sander Loyer in the Disney Channel original movie and its sequel, currently co-stars in another Disney Channel series, "Shake It Up," as Tyler Blue, the older brother of the show's lead character.

The video, also produced by Disney Channel, was even noticed by Time magazine, as the rap spotlights iconic African-American leaders like Martin Luther KIng, Rosa Parks and Jackie Robinson.

HIs father is African-American actor Roy Fegan, while his mother, Cion, is Filipino.

"That's what I'm doing, I'm representing. Filipino power!" the young Fegan told ABS-CBN News North America.

"I'm just blessed to be Filipino. I'm blessed to be representing on the [Disney] Channel. Hopefully there's more of us coming up soon," he said, referring to Fil-American actress Anna Maria Perez de Tagle, who also appeared in the "Camp Rock" movies.

Apart from acting, Fegan is also busy with his music career and is expected to launch an EP (extended play) on February 14 under his own label, 3inaRO (pronounced "three in a row") Entertainment, a reference to his "triple threat" talent.

"2012 is really a big year for me. I got a lot of things I'm getting prepared to do. A lot of things coming up, big things. So my music is one thing that's huge," he said.

He said he also wants to write rap songs about his being Filipino -- just like his idol, Apl.de,Ap of the Grammy-winning group Black Eyed Peas.

"Man, I love the Black Eyed Peas, I love Apl," he said.

Asked if he still considers himself Filipino, he said:""Everything. Down to my Filipino grandma's house, to the chicken adobo she cooks down to (raps) 'Yo, what's up, I love rice (laughs)."

Fegan said he remains grounded because of his parents and vowed not to change.
