Luis to co-host 'Sarah G Live!'

-By Ginger Conejero (ABS-CBNnews.com)

MANILA, Philippines – Singer-actress Sarah Geronimo said she is both excited and anxious as her musical variety show “Sarah G Live!” nears its air date.

Geronimo will be partnered with Luis Manzano as her weekly co-host, while Gab Valenciano will perform in the show every week.

Aside from Manzano and Valenciano, Geronimo will also have a rotating special guest host.

Among those being considered to guest co-host with her is leading man Gerald Anderson, who is also being romantically linked to her at the moment.

Geronimo said it would be nice to have Anderson on her new show since he has a special place in her heart.

However, she denied rumors the two are already an item.

"Ayaw ko na maglihim, malalaman ninyo if ever maging kami," she said.

Geronimo also dismissed specualtions that the actor is courting her even though Anderson gave her a Tiffany's necklace for Christmas.

Geronimo laughed off rumors of a deepening romantic relationship but she did admit that she and Anderson are in constant communication.

“Sarah G Live!” is set to premiere on February 26 and will take the timeslot of “Gandang Gabi Vice” on Sundays.

Witness in Corona impeach gives birth; Senate OKs substitute

-By Kate Evangelista (INQUIRER.net)

MANILA, Philippines – A witness who was expected to testify on the peso bank documents of Chief Justice Corona at the resumption of his trial Wednesday failed to appear because she gave birth earlier in the day, the lead prosecutor said.

Iloilo Representative Niel Tupas’ announcement on Leonora Dizon, branch manager of the bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) on Ayala Avenue, was confirmed by the bank’s representative Rosario Jurado-Benedicto who said that Dizon gave birth at 7:45 a.m.

Benedicto said Dizon’s replacement has not arrived.

Tupas said that Dizon submitted the documents regarding the monthly statement of accounts of Corona’s BPI peso account.

Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile then asked the senator-judges if they would welcome a substitute witness.
Senator Franklin Drilon, who specifically requested the recall of Dizon, confirmed that he was amenable to another witness so long as he or she could answer questions pertaining to the monthly statement of accounts.

Lead defense counsel former Associate Justice Serafin Cuevas questioned the recall of Dizon and the subpoena for the monthly statements of  account of Corona’s bank account. However, Enrile said that Senator Drilon still has pending questions regarding the bank account in question.

NCCA Honors Jericho; New Girlfriend Surfaces While Windsurfing With Him

-By Jecelyn V. Macahindog (Manila Bulletin)

MANILA, Philippines — The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) will recognize Jericho Rosales for his contribution in uplifting Filipinos’ talent in acting through the US-made film, “Subject: I Love You,” DZMM News reported.

The recognition is being done in line with the celebration of National Arts Month this February.

The NCCA, which recently opened the 2012 Philippine Arts Festival, proclaimed the month of February as National Arts Month. It aims to broaden Filipinos’ awareness of arts and culture.

Meanwhile, the upcoming “Nang Dahil Sa Pag-Ibig” actor reportedly found a new love with a Filipino-British model named Kim Jones.

Jones is a roving reporter for ETC’s lifestyle show “Etcetera,” which started airing last quarter of 2011.

The Australian native, in a recent interview, told Bulletin Entertainment that she enjoys her TV hosting debut in the country.

Jones updates viewers on style, events, trends and fashion and beauty tips direct from the scene via the social networking site Twitter.

Jericho’s last relationship was with another TV host, Cesca Litton. Past reports only hinted that he is indeed in a relationship with the Fil-Brit model.

Jones herself connected the dots when she uploaded on her Facebook account a series of pictures while windsurfing with Jericho in San Fernando City, La Union.

The "MasterChef" franchise originated with the U.K. version of the show. The American version stars celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay.

Day 17 trial ends early; JPE turns 88

MR. VALENTINE Senate President and impeachment court
presiding judge Juan Ponce Enrile is greeted by Senator Loren
Legarda on his 88th birthday before the
start of the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.
SENATE POOL
-By TJ Burgonio - Philippine Daily Inquirer

Chief Justice Renato Corona’s lawyers on Tuesday withdrew from a joint examination with the prosecution of the records of his accounts in the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), even as the Senate ordered the presentation of his monthly bank statements there for today’s trial.
The trial adjourned early at 4:30 p.m. in deference to Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, who marked his 88th birthday, and the celebration of Valentine’s Day.
“Today is February 14, your honor, the natal day of the presiding officer of this court. In addition to that this is Valentine’s Day. Maybe you can afford us a chance to spend time with our family? In short, I’m asking for a declaration of a cessation of hostilities,” chief defense counsel Serafin Cuevas told the court.
Chief prosecutor Iloilo Representative Niel Tupas Jr. joined the manifestation.
Enrile said in jest: “Thank you for being kind to a man in the predeparture room.”
Corona’s checking account with BPI Ayala branch had been used by the Chief Justice as a “disbursing account” to buy real estate property, including a unit in The Bellagio I in Fort Bonifacio, according to a member of the prosecution team, who asked not to be named.
The defense backed out of the joint inspection of his bank records for fear that this would open a “can of worms,” specifically the transactions made by Corona, said the prosecution member.
Only one witness, BPI branch manager Leonora Dizon, appeared on an otherwise brief Day 17 of the impeachment trial, testifying that Corona had no other accounts with its branch on Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City apart from the peso account.
The court also granted the prosecution’s motion discharging Marissa Bondoc, the corporate secretary of Camp John Hay Development Corp., as witness after she resigned from her post.
During the questioning of Dizon, Cuevas clarified that the defense lawyers merely asked for a breakdown of the peso account, but did not declare they were willing to disclose these since they had not conferred with the Chief Justice.
“After he (Corona) assured that we have these documents with us, we find no necessity to go over the documents in the possession of the banks,” Cuevas told the impeachment court. “We have chosen to withdraw, and we can’t be compelled by the prosecution, much less by a single senator-judge to do whatever is not in accordance with our postulation, articulation, your honor.”
He added: “We can’t be dictated upon, I beg permission of the court, on how we should handle the defense for our client … Neither the prosecution can tell us what to do.”
Monthly bank statements
Private prosecutor Arthur Lim pointed out to the court that the issue of joint inspection was left hanging in last Thursday’s hearing.
He said there were actually three sets of documents required by the court from the bank officials, and it was the defense who brought up Corona’s monthly statements.
The defense and the prosecution last Thursday initially agreed to jointly examine records of Corona’s accounts in the BPI branch on Ayala Avenue, but Cuevas requested to be given until Monday to decide on this after getting a call from Corona who said he has some of these accounts.
Sen. Franklin Drilon asked Dizon if she brought the copies of the monthly statements of Corona’s peso accounts from 2005 to 2010, but the latter said she did not because she was waiting for instructions when to present these.
Enrile then ordered her to bring the documents for today’s resumption of the trial.
Not an ordinary court
Under questioning by Sen. Sergio Osmeña III, Dizon said Corona did not have any related accounts such as time deposits, certificates of deposit, settlement accounts, investment management and trust accounts, unit investment trust funds and mutual funds, saying these were nonexistent.
He said he wondered why the defense seemed so protective of this.
Cuevas repeatedly posed objections to Dizon resuming her testimony and presenting documents, saying she was through with it, but he was overruled by Enrile.
“There’s no motion, there’s no ground, no justification [for the recall of the witness], whatsoever,” Cuevas said. But Enrile said there was a request from a senator-judge to recall her to the witness stand, and it was her or his prerogative to ask questions.
Cuevas responded: “That is our apprehension, and very real because every time we make a manifestation against the direct examination made by a member of this court, we’re overruled and this is because we can’t object. So what will be our remedy if the judge-senator proceeds to ask questions which to us are objectionable?
‘Like private prosecutors
“We cannot just go to the Supreme Court for relief against that irregularity … They’re not merely acting as judges, they’re practically appearing to us as private prosecutors.”
Enrile responded by saying that this was not an ordinary court, and that the members were legislators assigned to play another function in the impeachment court.
“We’re not one mind. We’re 23 minds in this court. That’s why I call it a body of jurors… As a body of jurors, each one has his own perceptions, and interests in this case to be able to make a final judgment on this case and I’m not in a position to deny that right to any member of this body of jurors,” he said.
The defense lawyers said they had filed a manifestation to quash the subpoena for the documents, but Enrile said the accounts cited in the subpoena were very specific.

PHILSTAR: Toroman faces new challenge

-By Joaquin Henson (The Philippine Star)

MANILA, Philippines - Toroman, 57, returned to Manila from Belgrade last Saturday.  He has agreed on a two-year contract to work as a consultant with Petron, Barangay Ginebra and B-Meg in the PBA and San Miguel Beer in the ABL.

“My priority is the three PBA teams,” said Toroman. “It’s a lot of work.  I will be attending the practice of all the teams and watching all the games in the PBA.  I will serve as an adviser.  I will not sit on the bench during games.  Before, my responsibility was for one team – Smart Gilas.  Now, I will be working with several teams.”

Toroman said he is excited to work closely with Petron coach Ato Agustin, Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen and B-Meg coach Tim Cone.  “Of course, I know all of them but I know Tim more closely than Ato or Siot,” he said.  “I’m excited to work with them.  I’ve spoken with Tim before.  I respect his work and I think he respects mine.”  Toroman will also be a consultant for San Miguel’s ABL squad coached by Bobby Parks.

Toroman said when his Smart Gilas contract expired, his priority was to find a job in the country.  “I love the Philippines,” he said.  “My wife (Tanya) loves the Philippines, too.  Right now, she is attending to obligations in Belgrade and will join me in Manila after a month.  I had an offer in Serbia to coach a club but I wanted to wait for an option in the Philippines.  I spent three wonderful years in the Philippines.  I’m very proud of what we accomplished with Smart Gilas.  I’m very grateful to the Filipino fans who came out to ask me to stay in internet forums, twitter and other message platforms. I think they showed their appreciation for what we achieved.  I don’t even know them but they messaged very nice things about me.”

Toroman said it is gratifying that several of his former Smart Gilas players are major contributors in the PBA today.  “I’m happy that they’re doing well, that they’re improving,” he said.  “Jvee (Casio), Marcio (Lassiter), Chris (Lutz), Dylan (Ababou), Mark (Barroca), Mac (Baracael) and Japeth (Aguilar) are some of our players now in the PBA.  I’m excited to be able to see them play closely again even if my work will be with coaches.”

Toroman said he won’t find it difficult adjusting to PBA rules despite his FIBA background.  “With Smart Gilas, we played in the PBA before so I’m familiar with the rules,” he said.  “There won’t be a problem in understanding the PBA game.  I don’t know if my opinion will be asked on possible player trades. As a consultant, my role is to advise, to share insights and suggest inputs.  Then the coaches will decide what to do when the game begins.”

Toroman said he will do his best in facing up to the new challenge.  “I’m a professional,” he said.  “I received an offer from the San Miguel group.  It was an exciting offer to be involved with the San Miguel teams.  When my Smart Gilas contract expired, I went back to Serbia and waited for 3 1/2 months.  Then, I returned to Manila to gather my belongings.  I’m happy that I can continue to be involved with basketball in the Philippines.  I’ve worked in several countries all over the world and I don’t think there’s any other country where people have a greater love and passion for the game.”

Toroman previously coached in Iran, China, Hungary, Bosnia-Herzogovina, Cyprus, Holland, Belgium, Poland, Greece and Yugoslavia.  He piloted Iran to the FIBA-Asia title in 2007, earning a slot in the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the process.  Last year, Toroman took the Philippines to fourth place in the FIBA-Asia Championships, the country’s best finish in 27 years resulting in an eight-rung upgrade in the FIBA rankings to No. 45.  The Philippines’ rise was the third highest behind No. 33 Macedonia with +14 and No. 43 England with +13.  The Olympic host country is ranked only two above the Philippines despite the presence of naturalized player Luol Deng of the Chicago Bulls.

Toroman isn’t the only Serbian coach in the country. Zoran Djordjevic, 60, was recently named head coach of the Philippine under-21 and under-23 football teams. Djordjevic previously coached in Sudan, Yemen, Bangladesh and India.

MB: Azkals Win

-By JONAS TERRADO (Manila Bulletin)

Match Thursday (Dubai, UAE )

11:30 p.m. — Philippines vs Australia U-23

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Azkals drew two goals from Phil Younghusband for a 3-1 victory over Qatar first division club Al Ahli in a friendly match held Tuesday at the Al Ahli Stadium in Doha.

Younghusband scored the ninth and 53rd minutes even as Denis Wolf registered his first goal since joining the team last month to bounce back from a 3-0 loss against the Uzbekistan U-23 team in Dubai.

Unlike in their match with the Uzbeks, the Azkals played much organized this time even as the defense held on despite yielding an Ali Solaiman Abshiri goal in the 57th minute.

The first goal of Younghusband came after receiving the ball from teammate and brother James before booting it to the back of the net to the delight of a huge Filipino crowd.

Wolf, a Fil-German who debuted last month in a friendly match with Korean club Icheon Citizens FC, made it 2-0 in the 45th minute when he scored inside the box off a deflection by the Al Ahli defense.

In the second half, Younghusband stretched the Azkals' lead to 3-0 after a goal kick by Roland Muller enabled him to get an easy advantage in the midfield. He then rolled the ball off keeper Hussein Al Hamdi outside of the box.
