PHILSTAR: Experts on Pacman-M'weather: Great but too late

THE GAME OF MY LIFE By Bill Velasco (The Philippine Star)
Miguel Cotto is no Manny Pacquiao, and Timothy Bradley is not Floyd Mayweather. Once again, boxing fans are disappointed that the only megabuck fight they’re anticipating isn’t taking place. Now the question is, will it ever happen at all?

The Star contacted various boxing experts in the Philippines and in the US for their opinions on whether or not a Pacquiao-Mayweather match-up would stll happen, and if fans would still appreciate it.

“There is just too much money to be made for this fight not to happen,” declares Atty. Ed Tolentino, ABS-CBN Sports commentator for “Top Rank Boxing”. “We are talking here of enough dollars that would make Bill Gates wet his pants in envy. Both fighters are nearing the end of their careers and for sure both of them are looking for a hell of a retirement gratuity. Long after their careers have ended, people will not be talking about the eight world titles Pacquiao won or how Mayweather won titles from light welterweight to super welterweight, but how they dodged each other.”

Meanwhile, others feel the matter has been talked out too much to make the same impact it would have previously.

“The truth is, a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight isn’t as big as it would have been two years ago because the fight has been overcooked in the eyes of many,” believes Ryan Songalia, a Filipino-American writer for RingTV. “Pacquiao’s stock has dipped since the close Marquez fight and Mayweather himself hasn’t been breaking new ground. The momentum of both men has really been stagnated. Both men have engaged in other bouts that people weren’t exactly clamoring to see them in, and the reason why is because they can still make money without taking the ultimate risk, which is fighting each other.”

Others believe it may be time to move past this blockbuster and look at new talent on the horizon. The shadows that Pacman and Pretty Boy Floyd cast are so large and, as the saying goes, nothing grows in the shade.

“Pacquiao and Mayweather may currently be the top dogs in the game, but it would be unfair for the sport to cast a shadow on the potential great match-ups that can be made,” adds “fight doctor” JV Tuazon, a Filipino-American boxer, boxing writer and physical therapist based in New Jersey. “How can a sport grow if we don’t cultivate new talent and bring them into the public’s eye? If we let this continue, we will need Pacquiao-Mayweather even more because the unrecognizable names will remain in obscurity.”

“I believe it has to happen! Manny and Mayweather will never be able to call themselves the best of their time if they don’t,” affirms Talk N Text center Ali Peek, a devout boxing fan for decades. “There has to be a fight to determine the best! It will haunt them the rest of their careers and even after. When the critics, you and me, the people worldwide that are diehard boxing fans, people in barber shops, particularly in the inner cities of the United States will have continuous arguments and debates. We will all wonder what could have been.”

There are so many side issues and distractions keeping both fighters from signing on the dotted line. There’s the animosity between Mayweather and Arum, his former promoter who is now Pacquiao’s. There’s the greed that causes each camp to ask for the bigger share of the purse. And of course, there’s the fear that each may actually lose the fight.

“Regarding the negotiations, it’s not as clear as black and white as to who is at fault for the fight not happening,” Songalia continues. “I feel that Pacquiao has always wanted the fight, and Mayweather as well. But both men want it on their own terms and neither is willing to back down on principle. The only losers there are the fans.”

Tolentino adds a humorous analogy to how crazy things have gotten.

“Imagine collapsing from hunger amid the abundance of food on the table. The food is on the table but nobody wants to touch it because Pacquiao, Mayweather and Arum all want the biggest slice of the pie!” Tolentino exclaims. “On the other hand, Mayweather’s paranoia – the thought of placing his unbeaten mark at serious risk – will also keep the fight from happening. Mayweather’s demands have ranged from strange to downright ridiculous. Next thing you know, he’ll demand that Pacquiao shave his moustache for the fight to happen – in the belief that it is the source of Pacman’s power.”

And if the fight never happens, it just may be the death of boxing as we know it. The increasing popularity of other contact sports such as mixed martial arts, the lack of commercially viable champions and confusion over boxing organizations has left fans confused and disillusioned. Boxing is taking too many hits and is barely on its feet.

“Honestly, I was a major fight fan in the 1990’s and early 2000’s, but boxing is dead without these two. There are so many belts and so many champions,” says an exasperated Peek. “It’s gotten to the point that no one knows or cares who holds belts! When I was growing up, Tyson had three belts: IBF, WBC, WBA. Now there’s IBO, WBO, I can’t even follow it anymore!”

Then again, there may be other, more diabolical reasons why the fight isn’t pushing through, and they point to Mayweather taking advantage of the march of time and manipulating public opinion against the naturally smaller Filipino champion.

“The only other negotiation I can think of that was this difficult was the one that preceded the Hagler-Leonard fight in 1987,” recalls Songalia. “That is of note because Leonard eventually faced Hagler after seeing signs of slippage in the highly favored Hagler. I think Pacquiao is entering that territory now.”

“I am worried that Pacquiao, whose native tongue is obviously not English, will be vilified in the eyes of Westerners because Mayweather speaks good, albeit not proper, English,” worries Tuazon, who works in the boxing community in the East Coast. “We all know what happened to the late, great Joe Frazier who, although he was a great man and a phenomenal fighter, was vilified in the eyes of the masses due to the oratory prowess of Ali. With Mayweather taking his comments, tweets, video posts etc., to the public, he is attempting to swing the popular vote towards him. History is not necessarily about the truth but who is believed.”

In the end, the consensus is the fight is already too late, but fans would watch it to settle all the issues between the two giants of the ring.

Shock, wave of tributes pour out for pop legend Whitney Houston

Shocked and Sad. Charice’s felt like she lost a relative.

MANILA, Philippines—Shock and a wave of tributes from music stars and industry leaders representing different generations poured out on Saturday at the news that pop legend Whitney Houston had been found dead in her hotel room in Los Angeles on the eve of the Grammys.

Her death brought a melancholic coda to one of the most celebrated careers in contemporary pop music history.

Regine Velasquez and Charice, two Filipino pop stars who cited Houston as an influence in their careers, were among those affected.

Velasquez told the Inquirer in a text message: “I’m deeply saddened by her passing. She influenced me, especially when I was just starting. I’m a fan and will always be one. Rest in peace, Ms Houston.”
Charice posted her reaction via Twitter: “One of my heroes, Whitney Houston. I will always love you … RIP.”

An hour later, Charice sent another message: “I still can’t believe this. I’m really shocked and sad. I feel like I lost a relative. I’m gonna cry. I’m shaking. Love u Whitney …”

The Los Angeles Times reported that days before her death, Houston behaved erratically during an appearance on Thursday at a rehearsal for a Grammy awards party.

Though she greeted people with a warm smile, she appeared disheveled, with mismatched clothes and dripping-wet hair, the paper said.

According to the report, the singer flailed her hands frenetically as she spoke, skipped around the ballroom in a childlike fashion and wandered aimlessly about the lobby.

Musicians, many already in Los Angeles ahead of the Grammys on Sunday (Monday in Manila), paid tribute to the singer, who sold over 170 million records.

“She was one of the greatest singers I ever heard,” said veteran crooner Tony Bennett, on the red carpet at the Beverly Hills Hotel, where Houston’s body was found in her fourth floor room.

“Heartbroken and in tears over the shocking death of my friend … She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth,” wrote Mariah Carey.

Grammys organizing chief Neil Portnow called Houston “one of the world’s greatest pop singers of all time who leaves behind a robust musical soundtrack spanning the past three decades … A light has been dimmed in our music community.”

Smokey Robinson told CNN: “I will always love her. She is one of the greatest voices in the history of music.”

The Recording Academy is scrambling to include some kind of tribute to Houston in Sunday evening’s show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, according to CNN.

Jermaine Jackson, whose brother Michael died in similarly shocking fashion at the age of 50 in June 2009 in Los Angeles, said his thoughts went out to Houston’s gospel singer mother Emily “Cissy” Houston.

“I can imagine what she’s going through, because I … we’ve been through with my mother and it’s very tough to lose a child, and for you to outlive your child,” he told CNN.

Christina Aguilera added: “We have lost another legend. Love and prayers to Whitney’s family. She will be missed.”

From the younger generation, Canadian teen sensation Justin Bieber tweeted: “Just heard the news. so
crazy. One of the GREATEST VOICES EVER just passed. RIP Whitney Houston. My prayers go out to her friends and family.”   -With reports from Associated Press and  AFP

John Prats admits relationship with Bianca Manalo

Bianca Manalo and John Prats

-By ABS-CBNnews.com
MANILA, Philippines – Dancer and actor John Prats finally admitted that he and beauty queen Bianca Manalo are already a couple.

In an interview with “The Buzz” on Sunday, Prats said he would not have loved Manalo if he never felt that she loved him too.

“Siguro naman ‘di ba kami na talaga. Hindi ko naman siya talaga mamahalin ng sobra sobra kung hindi ko alam na ganun din ang pinapakita niya sakin,” he said.

Prats said he is hoping that Manalo is already the one he will spend the rest of his life with.

Meanwhile, Manalo shared her birthday message for Prats, who will be celebrating his birthday on February 14.

“Happy birthday. Another year na mas marami ka pang pagdadaanan and mas marami ka pang matututunan sa buhay,” she said.

Manalo said she is happy to have found a friend in Prats.

“Thank you sa lahat, sa pag-alaga, sa concern. Napakaswerte ko na mayroon akong isang katulad mo. Happy birthday and sana ngayong 20 years ka na sa showbiz industry, sana kung sino si John Prats dati, ganun ka pa rin sa magiging years pa na pagtatrabahuhan mo. I’m happy it’s your birthday,” Manalo added.

Grace Lee sees herself marrying P-Noy

This handout photo taken on December 23, 2011 and released by Malacanang on February 2, 2012 shows President Aquino talking to media personality Grace Lee prior to an interview at the Malacañan Palace in Manila. The altar.
That’s where Grace Lee says her relationship with President Benigno Aquino III is headed.

In her morning show “Good Times in the Morning” last Wednesday, the Korean-born radio and TV personality was asked by her New York-based co-anchor Mo Twister how long their relationship would last.

She replied, “The full length.”

Needled further on where she expected their dates would lead to, Lee answered, “The altar.” She added, “I’m praying for this.”

Aquino celebrated his birthday on Wednesday, Feb.8, the same day Lee said they were destined for the altar.

The romance between the 29-year-old Lee and the 52-year-old Aquino has been met with skepticism by many who have become used to the President’s short-lived romances. Among those linked to him in his almost two-year presidency are Valenzuela councilor Shalani Soledad, who recently married Pasig City Rep. Roman Romulo, stylist Liz Uy and stockbroker Len Lopez.

During the program, Mo Twister predicted the relationship to last until “August.”

He then opened the phone lines to the question, “How long will this (Aquino-Lee) relationship last?” One listener replied, “May.”

The bachelor president admitted two weeks ago that he has been dating Lee.

While Aquino asked media to grant him the privacy he said he was entitled to, Lee has been forthcoming in media interviews. She disclosed that she and the President would talk animatedly for three to five hours.

“He’s brilliant, he is the most intelligent man I’ve met in my life,” an obviously smitten Lee enthused, even describing the President as “a walking encyclopedia.”

Lee revealed in an off-camera talk with a TV host that the President had offered to provide her security courtesy of a team from the Presidential Security Group. This prompted Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte to say the Palace would still have to review whether or not the mandate of the PSG can cover even persons outside the President’s official family.

Lee’s talent manager Arnold Vegafria said the radio and TV jockey first met on June 27, 2011 at the inauguration of the Korea Electric Power Corp. in Barangay Colon in Naga, Cebu. He said the President was heard to have remarked that Lee was “guapa (pretty),” mistaking her to be Cebuana.

Their second meeting took place during the state visit of Korean president Lee Myung-bak in November, where Lee was in Malacañang as an interpreter and host of the event.

Before the end of 2011, Vegafria said the President granted Lee an interview in Malacanang for her radio show. “And that’s it,” he said.

In an earlier exclusive interview with TV5’s Luchi Cruz-Valdes for the show “Journo,” Lee admitted that the 22-year age difference between them sometimes bothers her. “But the more I get to know him, the less I feel the age difference,” she said.

Asked by Cruz-Valdes if she sees the relationship “pushing through already," Lee replied, “I don't think we're playing around. We're both not at the age to be playing around.”

In her radio show, Lee said she would try to convince the President to stop smoking.

She has met with two of the President’s elder sisters, Ballsy Cruz and Pinky Abellada, but has yet to meet his movie-and-TV-star sister, Kris Aquino.

Lee denied earlier rumors linking her romantically to Kris’ former husband, basketball star James Yap.

Inactive Actress Nancy 'Surfaces' In Vicki-Hayden Romance

-By Tweety Bird De Leon (Manila Bulletin)
MANILA, Philippines — Many things can happen in just one day. Relationships and lives can be altered just because of one simple, sometimes seemingly harmless, tweet. Take a look at these fine examples – the “love triangle” among Vicki Belo, Hayden Kho, and Nancy Castiglione.

Vicki Belo (@vicki_belo) on Hayden and Nancy:

“nancycastilogne you can now openly date @haydenjr. You have my blessings. Hope you’ll both be happy.”

Hayden Kho (@haydenjr) on his misunderstanding with Vicki:

“Before things go out of hand: Vicki and I are just having a misunderstanding. Don’t make conclusions. There’s infidelity issue here.”

“I meant NO infidelity issue.”

“I’d like to appeal to everyone to please hold your judgement. There has been a misunderstanding and it’s gone out of proportion. I feel that the public doesn’t have to get involved in this but since names have to be cleared and this issue involves the welfare of two innocent toddlers, I will have to speak out my piece, but at the right time. Thank you.”

“First off, I’d like to make it very clear that Vicki and I are not fighting because of Nancy.I have already apologized to Nancy for getting her name dragged into this minor bump in my relationship w/ Vicki. This issue stemmed not fr facts not rumors; but fr mindless & loveless faultfinding wc occasionally happens when 2 people hv a disagreement.I understand that some will hv d urge to comment in jest or mockery to flame d issue; but I appeal 2u to keep ur jokes 2 urself. There is NO issue of infidelity here. As a matter of fact, Vicki & 1 have been doing very well in our relationship. And finally, since this is already public, I might as well say this in public- @vicki_belo, I love you. Let’s all have a happy valentines day on the 14th. And yes, I love you more than Temple Run. @vicki_belo”

As they say, abangan na lang natin ang susunod na kabanata.
