Facebook downtime triggers Anonymous hacking rumors

Social networking site Facebook experienced some downtime Wednesday evening (US time), triggering speculations of an attack by hacktivist group Anonymous.

The speculations were heightened when a Twitter account associated with Anonymous posted a tweet indicating the site was having a "slight accessibility problem."

"(C)ough cough, uh, looks like http://facebook.com is having a slight accessibility problem," the YourAnonNews Twitter account said.

Tech site CNET said Facebook was "experiencing some problems" while ReadWriteWeb said the downtime was "intermittent."

But after an hour, YourAnonNews posted another message on Twitter: "Facebook down? http://goo.gl/lZo9n -- Bwahaha, trolled! #Anonymous ^_^"

However, the AnonOps Twitter account —which has frequently been associated with Anonymous— has flatly denied the hacktivist group's involvement in Facebook's system problems.

"#Facebook.com is NOT under denial of service attack. STOP LYING," it said.

Earlier this week, a group claiming to be allied with Anonymous had promised to attack Facebook this Saturday.

But CNET quoted a Facebook spokesman as saying Facebook merely pushed out some code "too aggressively."

"We pushed out code too aggressively some time between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Everything is fine now," it quoted the spokesman as saying.

CNET also quoted the Facebook spokesman as reiterating the social networking giant was ready. — TJD, GMA News
